  • Overview

    Serves as assistant editor for newspaper, working on editing, writing, production and management of APHA newspaper and its related products.


    Serves as assistant editor and reporter for newspaper, working on editing, writing, production and management of APHA newspaper and its related products. Helps ensure accuracy, consistent style and journalistic integrity throughout newspaper, website, app and other products. News writer for The Nation’s Health, both print and online. Responsible for public health news reporting and APHA coverage, including researching stories, interviewing sources, writing, fact-checking and editing. Works on copyediting and proofreading newspaper content. Develops story ideas based on APHA priorities, mission of organization and current events relevant to public health. Works on monthly newspaper layout process, graphic design and newspaper social media. Serves as a photographer for newspaper. Serves as coordinator of The Nation’s Health intern and liaises with freelancers and newspaper vendors. Assists with other newspaper, communication or APHA work or projects as needed.


    Minimum of bachelor’s degree in journalism. At least five years’ experience in news writing, research, reporting and editing as well as newspaper production. Knowledge of health/public health field and management and supervisory experience desirable. Excellent writing, reporting, editing, proofreading and photography skills. Strong knowledge of AP Style. Knowledge of newspaper layout and desktop publishing. Knowledge of web-based publishing, including content management systems and basic HTML, desired. Knowledge and experience with social media, such as blogs and Twitter, desirable. Ability to easily learn new technology and apply to work is essential. Ability to work on strict deadlines, handle a variety of tasks and balance fast-paced, detailed workload. Excellent organization, communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a small team. Ability to juggle multiple editorial tasks serving both the newspaper as well as APHA overall.


    Hours: 35 hours a week, full-time, Mon- Fri. (daytime).  Number of openings: 1.
