  • Overview

    Provides administrative and coordination support to the Governing Council, Science Board and Joint Policy Committee.


    Governing Council – Provide technical and administrative support to the Association’s Governing Council: Assist in the preparation and dissemination of meeting materials; maintain the governance portion of the APHA web site and ensure the content is accurate, timely and organized.  Prepare reports; update and maintain leadership records in APHA database.  Coordinate the election process for APHA officers at the Governing Council meeting.  Science Board – Serve as the primary staff liaison to the volunteer leaders of the Association’s Science Board: Support the development and dissemination of Board meeting agenda’s, record meeting minutes, maintain records, and manage the Board’s budget.  Coordinate logistics for virtual and in-person committee meetings, implements and monitors Board processes and procedures, and facilitates communication and coordination between committees, APHA staff and other APHA units.  Joint Policy Committee (JPC) – Provide technical and administrative support to the Association’s Joint Policy Committee: Coordinate the policy statement development process; serve as staff liaison with members; schedule virtual and in-person committee meetings; process policy statement submissions; track progress of policy statements over yearlong cycle which includes working with professional copyeditor to post policy statements to the website.  Develop and manage schedules for policy statement cycle and handle inquiries and requests related to JPC.  Other Duties – Staff and support the Nominations Committee, and Bylaws Committee: Prepare materials, record keeping, meeting logistics and report preparation and dissemination.  Responsible for the budget preparation and management for the Governing Council, Science Board, Joint Policy Committee, and Nominations Committee.  Plan, budget and coordinate three president’s (President, President-Elect, and Immediate Past President) visits to affiliate public health associations’ annual meetings with the Director of Affiliate Affairs (at least 17 per year).  Perform other related duties as assigned.


    Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required (prefer degree in in public health or science closely related to public health practice).  Master’s degree in public health (or a science closely related to public health practice) or equivalent experience preferred.  At least 5 years of project coordination and administrative experience supporting projects and programs at progressively higher levels.  Knowledge of public health issues, health personnel, health administration.  Ability to coordinate and follow through on several complex and highly visible projects concurrently.  Experience working with board committees or member committees.  Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to write, edit and proofread written materials.  Good interpersonal skills, including ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with APHA staff, volunteer leaders, members, and representatives of public agencies and private organizations in the health and scientific communities.  Excellent organizational skills, with demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and to complete tasks with a minimum of supervision and proven attention to detail.  Demonstrates a positive attitude, results-oriented approach to work; works effectively under pressure; self- motivated.  Computer savvy, including experience managing databases and developing content for and posting materials to the web.  Ability to exercise discretion and sensitivity in handling confidential matters.  Mature judgment and strong sense of responsibility.


    Hours: 35 hours a week, full-time, Mon- Fri. (daytime).  Number of openings: 1.
