Overview

Provide leadership, identification of purpose and engagement of strategic partners and direct the Center and its activities within APHA. The Director is responsible for establishing the focus of the Center, overseeing projects and developing capacity of the staff to serve as a resource to the association and the field. Collaborating with the various units, the Director will develop and implement the continuing education program for public health and health practitioners, maintain relevant accreditations, oversee the Global Health initiative and provide leadership in partnering with outside organizations on professional development, global health and public health practice activities.

Responsibilities

Direct and evaluate APHA’s Continuing Education Program. Oversee APHA’s accreditation standards program, ensure compliance through continuous quality improvement and develop annual reports for accreditation bodies. Lead APHA’s reaccreditation process. Develop online educational opportunities for members and others who are interested in public health career advancement or new developments in public health science. Oversee the development of the continuing education credit worthy activities that include in-person meetings and web-based programs. Oversee and develop content for the Center’s educational program at the APHA Annual Meeting. Oversee the expansion and promotion of the Continuation Education Program. Engage in public speaking engagements, guest lectures and represent APHA at various partner meetings/conferences/exhibitions. Manage select federal cooperative agreements or other grant activities including budgeting, fundraising, program implementation, report development and communication with funders. Direct and oversee public health practice activities. Lead program planning, development and implementation of the Center’s budget. The position will supervise the following positions: Coordinator-Continuing Education Services; Global Health Manager; Injury and Violence Prevention Fellow; Manager-Continuing Education Services; Program Manager, Community Health Leadership Program; Public Health Practice Manager; and Public Health Program Manager. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Graduate degree and 10 or more years of work experience in public health. Ability to apply research findings to practice. Strong management skills and proven availability to maintain accreditation status for ACCME, ANCC, NCHEC and NBPHE is required. Knowledge of organizational, operational, and programmatic concepts and practices applied by public, private, or nonprofit agencies/organizations in public health or health-related areas. The ability to manage and support staff, various association-wide tasks, and projects. Experience with grant management and oversight of budgets. Knowledge of specialized public health programs and training/practice issues. Knowledge and skill in the application of administrative & analytic methods and techniques necessary for working within the framework of public health. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including grant writing, oral presentations, preparing reports, and other written materials. Must be willing to work before or after business hours, including weekends and travel to staff APHA related meetings as needed and required to attend APHA Annual meeting. 

 

Position is based in downtown DC near several metro stations.  Hybrid work environment.

 

Hours: 35 hours a week, full-time, Monday - Friday (daytime).  Number of openings: 1.
