The American Public Health Association (APHA) is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Program Specialist to support the Center for Public Health Practice and Professional Development in advancing capacity building and professional development initiatives. This role plays a key part in coordinating activities under the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS), including the New Investigator Award and Reverse Site Visit. The ideal candidate is highly organized, mission-driven, and committed to strengthening public health infrastructure through innovative and impactful programming. This position will work closely with the Public Health Practice Manager to ensure the effective planning and execution of key program components.

Coordinate flagship activities under the NVDRS grant such as the New Investigator Award and Reverse Site Visit. Support award program implementation, including outreach, application review logistics, and communication with awardees. Assist in the planning and execution of all logistics for Reverse Site Visit. Monitor project timelines, deliverables, and data tracking; contribute to reports, presentations, and toolkits. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment and progress on all program goals. Work closely with the Public Health Practice Manager to provide programmatic support and execution of strategic priorities. Assist with the development of professional development activities such as webinars and other distance learning opportunities. Work with APHA membership unit to strengthen APHA’s professional development programs. Provide support in monitoring and evaluating public health practice initiatives. The position will assist in identifying new funding opportunities that align with the subject areas within the Center. Partner with APHA’s Events team to support NVDRS-related events, Center webinars, and a biannual conference. Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, or a related field. 3–5 years of relevant experience in program coordination, grants administration, and nonprofit or public sector operations. Demonstrated ability to manage grants and cooperative agreements, including compliance monitoring and proposal support. Strong organizational, time management, and multitasking skills with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Proficient in Microsoft platforms and online tools such as Zoom, SurveyMonkey, and online systems used for managing requests for applications. Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Must be able to work occasional evening and weekend work as job duties or projects require it; Must be available to support APHA related meeting onsite and offsite, and required to attend the APHA Annual Meeting. Requires occasional lifting and moving to 25 lbs. Preferred Skills: Experience working with national associations or public health organizations. Familiarity with online grant portals. Ability to support budget reconciliation, monitor expenditures, and contribute to grant and programmatic reporting. Skilled in logistics for events, conferences, and reverse site visits. Proficiency in project management tools for tracking deliverables, timelines, and stakeholder coordination.

Hours: 35 hours a week, full-time, Monday - Friday (daytime). Number of openings: 1.
